| Jellyfish sans the sting |
Our short tour at the jellyfish sanctuary was my favorite part of our Bucas Grande tour. You might ask what’s so special about the jellyfish swimming there. Well, just when everybody believes that every jellyfish stings, what is found here in Bucas Grande are thousands of stingless little organisms. It is a rare opportunity to encounter such creatures that are said to be found only here and in two other places in the world: Indonesia and Palau.

A paddle boat took us on a calm 10-minute ride from the Sohoton Reception Center to the lagoon where the jellyfish dwell. As soon as we passed through a channel between two gigantic rock formations, I was caught in amazement seeing thousands of orange jellyfish swimming in the clear waters.

Before, swimming with the jellyfish was allowed. Later on, it was found that sun block and other chemicals that contaminate the water cause harm to these stingless wonders. The jellyfish tend to stay at the bottom of the water when they come into contact with sun block at or near the surface of the water.
If you would like to spot thousands of jellyfish in Sohoton, be sure to schedule a trip between March and July, which is the jellyfish season. They subsist in warm weather. During the rainy season, they either die or migrate. A typical stingless jellyfish has a lifespan of 5 months.

Boat Rental good for 20-25 persons – 3500 pesos for whole day tour, 2500 pesos for half day tour
Boat docking fee – 100 pesos
Entrance Fee per person (one-time fee for all attractions in Sohoton) – 25 pesos
Environmental Fee per person (one-time fee for all attractions in Sohoton) – 25 pesos
Life vest (optional one-time fee for all attractions)– 30 pesos
Paddle boat rental with driver (can only accommodate one guest) – 100 pesos
